Review of Poltergeist 2015 Full Movie: Then something really strange happens. While mom and dad are at a party, Kendra s cell phone leads her to the garage where the floor splits open and a skeleton pops up. Hilarious. The clown on the shelf starts running around and the tree breaks through a skylight and Griffin is held upside-down by his ankles. Guffaw. And finally, Maddie is enticed into a portal in her closet when spirits drag her teddy bear (well, actually its a unicorn pig stuffed animal) into the void. Are we scared yet, Scott? SCOTT: Not really, Greg. As you point out, it's unclear whether this version of Poltergeist belongs in the horror genre or the comedy genre.

The casting of Sam Rockwell makes sense only if the film was intended to be a comedy. Rockwell is a wonderful actor, but he tends to play characters who don t take the things that go on around them seriously. He doesn't t seem to be taking anything seriously in this film, not his marriage, not his kids, nor the hundreds of evil spirits that have set up shop in his youngest daughter s closet. He s an immature goofball caught in a movie that I think is trying to be a serious thriller. Movies like this can only work if all the characters, in the beginning, under-react to events that would send ordinary people running for the hills.
It would be a very short movie if people in Poltergeist behaved rationally. So the family sticks around for a few days despite the fact that electronic equipment goes on and off at random intervals, and objects are moving by themselves. Even paranormal scientist Brooke Powell (Jane Adams) has an assistant, Boyd (Nicholas Braun), who is t convinced that anything is amiss even after seeing a chair float in the air by itself and smash into a wall.
I will admit, I didn't watch it all. I made it to the clown scene. However, I'm such a big fan of the original that I couldn't get into this one at all. I guess if it was an original story, it would be passable, but I am just sick of great movies being remade. It is unnecessary and I didn't like the updating on this one. The teenage daughter also needed a kick up the ass, who wants to watch an entitled brat carrying on about a mobile phone on Poltergeist!
Perhaps the biggest disappointment this year. I was a HUGE fan of the original and part of its appeal was the sense of love that the family had for each other. Mother & daughter in particular. While this version starts out feeling like a comparable homage...it has none of the heart or soul that the first one had. Not to mention the fact that there was little to no build up to the daughter's abduction. I left the theater angry because the potential was there.
Poltergeist represents horror at its top form in the early 80's. It's not the best horror movie out there, but it definitely deserves its high praise. Relying on the cast and practical effects to drive this ridiculous story, "Poltergeist" becomes far more impressive than it should be. I loved Poltergeist almost to the point that it has become one of my favorite horror films, however, I am not too much of a fan of how off-the-rails it goes towards the end of the film. I liked leaving everything to my imagination. I jumped, felt the pain, and I was scared for the parents in this film.
Every good element that a horror film should have is present here. With a great cast, a lovable and insane premise, everything about this film just feels right, as far as this genre goes. "Poltergeist" is one hell of a thrilling horror flick that I can watch anytime. Highly recommended to the horror junkies.
The good news is it at least tries something different from part 2, so it's a bit refreshing. The bad news is what they do isn't very good. It's not scary at all at this point and the special effects have gotten really bad. The script is ridiculous, like 90% of the "scares" in this movie are Heather O'Rourke turning to the camera with "scary" makeup on and making faces. It happened so many times that it could probably be a drinking game.
There is a really cool moment in the middle of the movie where someone comes out of someone else's dead body. That was interesting. None of the characters are likable, and while Heather O'Rourke was cute at one point, she is, unfortunately, getting a bit too old to be acting the way she is portrayed. Nancy Allen's character is a horrible person and not someone you really want to see makes it through.
Also, I found it funny that the movie ended and wrapped up and no one seemed to remember that THE YOUNG GUY IS STILL TRAPPED IN ANOTHER DIMENSION! YOU NEVER SAVED HIM! Oh, we're gonna just forget him? Okay.
This is a hard sell. Most who liked Poltergeist 2 won't like this because it's too different, and those who disliked Poltergeist 2 won't like this because it's still not very good. So there's really no one to recommend this too, but I at least feel it is somewhat as good as Poltergeist 2 because it's at least different and it held my attention throughout (whereas Poltergeist 2 had plenty of lulls). Definitely wouldn't recommend this movie though.
