Review of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Full Movie

Review of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Full Movie: Going back to the well. So Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is back, and wouldn't you know that he's in trouble again. A scorned ghost pirate (Javier Bardem) is seeking vengeance on Jack, so he's got to find Poseidon's trident if he wants to stand a chance of breaking the ghost's curse and surviving. Even though this is a series that is but a shadow of its former glory, I still think fondly of this franchise. The first movie still holds up to this day, and I think Dead Man's Chest is a largely underrated rollercoaster ride.

I even remember liking the third movie, although, with a three-hour runtime, I've never once felt the need to go back and revisit it. The fourth and now the fifth movie I can say is underwhelming, but I'd be lying if I said that there aren't moments to be enjoyed. The thing about this series is that Jack Sparrow was never at any point supposed to be the lead.

This was never about him, he was just a side character that helped to progress the story. But once Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley made their exits, the studio didn't have much of a choice but to pay Johnny's bloated price tag in the hope of keeping people coming back for more. Sure, you get knock-off characters in both this and in On Stranger Tides that are supposed to replace Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, but it is never quite the same.

Absolutely horrible. The plot made no sense. The special effects didn't sync up with the scenes. Characters appeared inexplicably out of nowhere with no explanation. All around an absolutely horribly written movie without any of the charm of the previous however many. I'm embarrassed having watched it. I award no points, and may God have mercy on their souls.

Pirates 5 was an entertaining popcorn-movie that I thought was a good addition to the franchise. Now, it was not a masterpiece by any means. There's no Oscar-worthy acting, groundbreaking CGI, captivating screenwriting, or deep intellectual meanings. However, when I left the theater I definitely felt entertained and that I got my money's worth. There's a lot of good action and comedy in this film and it was fun seeing all of the original characters on screen, but they don't steal screen time from the newer characters, who I thought were good additions to the Pirates story and I hope we can see those characters grow as the franchise continues, which looks like is going to happen. Also, there are some good character arcs which, although a bit too abrupt at times, brought some surprisingly decent gravitas to this adventurous Disney film.

Overall, as a Pirates fan, I thoroughly enjoyed Pirates 5. Admittedly, it didn't live up to the hype of the first film, but it was entertaining enough to make me want to rerun through the entire franchise from the beginning, which is always a good time! It was a good adventure film and I'm excited to see where the story goes from here.

While certainly not as good as the first installation in the series, 'Dead Men' is considerably better than the last two films in the series (for whatever that's worth...). After the 'Curse of the Black Pearl,' Depp's Jack Sparrow was a beloved, unique and memorable character: a funny and fresh anti-hero who perfectly blended his considerable skills and wits with a good bit of luck. Since that first film, he's come off as more and more of a broken record, trying ever more desperately to make people laugh at the same jokes told in a new way. This movie still has quite a bit of that, but they were at least a bit more creative in the delivery than in the last few attempts. They also cut down on some of the cheese (though there was still more than most people would wish for) and threw out most of the convoluted double-crossing-the double-crosser-who-double-crossed-you-for-double-crossing-them nonsense that started piling up in 'At World's End.'

I'd like to give it a higher rating since I mostly enjoyed it (around 60% of the movie was good IMHO), but with the asterisk, that I like to skip a few parts (especially the parts with the bank safe) when I re-watch this movie. The villain is good, although he could be better, he's an enjoyable villain, I only wish he could have been a little less 1 dimensional and a little more developed. Jack could use some rework/rethink, and he really should go back being a secondary character, like in the first movie, because that's where he belongs, and that's where he's the best at, now he feels really tired, and it's coming from someone, who still loves Captain Jack Sparrow and wishes for a really good movie, perhaps even as good as the first, with him in it. Barbossa is still very good, the new characters are... acceptable.

I have really mixed feelings about this movie, on one hand, my inner PotC fan wants more, and my other half knows it's kinda tired now and maybe it should just stop at this point, and I should just occasionally re-watch the brilliant first movie and the others sometimes. (Sidenote, I really just wanted to see Jack and Barbossa just go on an adventure together, maybe to find a treasure, both as pals and as rivals at the same time, kinda like in 4 (or in all movies as a matter of fact), but still that scene under the palm trees is one of my favourite potc scenes, and I wanted more of it.
