Men in Black 3 Movie Review

Men in Black 3 Movie Review: There seems to be a consensus when it comes to ranking the three Men in Black movies. MIB 1 was the best and the funniest, MIB 2 was pretty much a complete flop, and by far the worst, and MIB 3 was not quite a return to form, but a million times better than the second and a good way to close the franchise. I would actually have to disagree with this because I thought MIB 3 was definitely the worst. Not bad, but not nearly as good as 1 and 2.

I see why people think MIB 3 is the second best in the MIB franchise, and late film critic Roger Ebert even went as far to say it was his favorite, a view not uncommonly shared by people. MIB 3 his the first movie in the franchise to have a real intriguing suspenseful plot. And things tie together nicely at the end give MIB 3 a sweet emotional ending. But overall, MIB 3 is simply not as funny as the first two. And yes in order to get us to laugh, the first two MIB's were pretty silly at times, but isn't that why we watched them? I don't think there was one moment in MIB 3 where I laughed out loud. There were some funny moments, but the script simply wasn't very good. In addition, there weren't as many aliens this time around, which was quite disappointing. And again, MIB 3 just is not that funny. Instead of the usual Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones humor, we see Will Smith and Josh Brolin play off each other. Brolin is playing a younger agent K, as agent J (Will Smith) has to go back in time.

And I credit MIB 3 for casting Brolin who looks and sounds like Jones, and gets agent K as a character down pat. But the script really doesn't provide that many funny moments like the previous two did. I really never cared how silly the MIB movies were because they made it work and it was always fun. But I think director Bryan Sonnenfield let the criticisms of the second MIB change the way he made this third one. The second MIB was criticized for just recycling the same elements of the first, partially true, but I still thought it was funny, and I got what I wanted out of it. MIB 3 left me feeling a little disappointed. It wasn't all that funny, and there weren't many aliens. Don't get me wrong, MIB 3 had the best plot out of all the MIB movies, it wasn't as 'gimmicky' and fans of the franchise really will appreciate the touching ending. But by crafting a better more serious plot, with less gimmicks, MIB 3 is not nearly as entertaining or as funny as the first 2. This might be what some people wanted, but for people like me who didn't mind the stupid plots of the first two because of all the aliens and how funny they were, you might be a little disappointed with MIB 3.
