Review of Amityville: The Awakening 2015 Full Movie

Review of Amityville: The Awakening 2015 Full Movie: Rebooting the franchise, Amityville: The Awakening takes a fresh look at the haunted house that terrified a generation. The story follows a recently widowed mother who moves her two daughters and invalid son to a house in the country hoping that the change will help her son's condition, and when he starts to improve the eldest daughter begins to question whether it's really him or if he's being possessed. Both Jennifer Jason Leigh and Bella Thorne give solid performances, and the film has an interesting meta quality to it where both the real-life events and the films exist. But the horror is rather tame and the forces of evil are limited in their power and influence (not really going beyond the one possession). While it gets some points for creativity, Amityville: The Awakening doesn't have much ambition and sets a rather low bar for itself.

This movie gave me a good amount of entertainment, some good scares, and creepiness. there is also a bunch of really dumb moments and things you can make fun of, things that make no sense. and the movie is poorly made, with terrible dialogue and weird editing (one moment made me throw my hands up, a stabbing scene immediately cuts to the outside of the house and then returns once the stabbing is done. maybe it was originally supposed to be rated R, but that was so glaring and terrible) (i looked it up, it was originally R until they re-submitted a milder version to be pg-13. despicable. I think all 15 previous movies in this series are rated R) (1 viewing)

So the Amityville series continues. What this is like overall a tenth film. The last one was a decade ago. I'm okay with their idea of bringing it up. But there's nothing new in it. Only it was a different cast and timeline. So basically, you probably have seen this story in other flicks.

A family of a single mother with one child with a serious medical condition moves into the most popular haunted house, the Amityville. The other one, a teen girl discovers the rumors from her new schoolmates. But the mother won't heed it, till unusual events begin to unfold. So how it all ends are the rest of the film.

The cast was good, and that's it, the film was average. If you are a big fan of horror, then this would be even a worse film, because you might have seen hundreds of similar flicks. I think Amityville franchise is dead, because of bad storied films. Otherwise with good filmmakers, particularly the writer, it could come back to the old glory. So now, it's not that worth. I would suggest to check it out other horrors released in this year. If you enjoy the odd scary movie, this may be worth watching. However, if you're a die-hard horror movie fan, I wouldn't recommend this one. The film its self-was not well done, it didn't hold my interest and there were so many points you just expect things to happen.

I would have preferred if they began sooner with the background story about the brother getting injured, instead of letting it go until the middle of the film in order to understand just what happened and WHY the sister felt so guilty about the incident.

Not the worst movie I've seen, but it definitely has its flaws. It feels extremely rushed and barely focuses on the characters at all. It's as if the editor has just cut entire scenes out of a would-be decent movie. While Bella Thorne is a decent actress, and I've seen some of her other non-Disney work that wasn't bad, I don't know if she is to the point of being a leader just yet. Part of that could be the horrendous script she is working with though so I won't bash her too much. She does fine with what she has to work with. The other actors are all ok, and nobody stuck out to me either as great or horrible. The actual story itself isn't so bad as a concept, but the execution was just very sub-par. By the end of the movie when the climax is taking place, I find myself caring for Thorne's character Belle, but nobody else because we barely spend time with the other characters. You can see exactly where the plot is going as the movie progresses, maybe with one or two unexpected details, but all in all you can predict this movie start to finish. You can see why it only got a limited theatrical release.

Overall, while it is nothing too special to be excited about, It is a passable movie to watch together with some friends, especially on Halloween. It can be fun if you really want it to be fun. As long as you don't go in with huge expectations, you can find some enjoyment in it.
