Review of Ace Ventura 3 Full Movie: Complete crap. It's like the people that did the first and second forgot what the movie was like. Not to mention this new idea of making movies straight to DVD being prequels or sequels is a really trashy idea. It's like they figure "How can I exploit an already established name and do nothing to make it worthwhile and have no originality?"
Jim's over the top performance was amusing at best but let's be honest, the only reason people watched them was that he was in them. There were no original pieces to this movie period except perhaps the stylist for the hair, and even then I'm not sold. Having some old guy trying to play the part of Ace's father was incredibly lame and became incredibly painful as he tried to spout off the catchphrases. The kid did his own character and wasn't like a really cheap knock-off like I had figured he would be. This isn't suitable for anyone to watch. It's unimaginative, unoriginal and unfunny.
When I saw this on theater in early 1996, the only Jim Carrey movie I had previously watched was the hilarious "The Mask", so my 17 years old self-had high expectations for this one, and Jim delivered. Or at least didn't disappoint. It's absurd, over the top, but...is really funny. Well, at least in 1996 I laughed hard. I've seen some snippets on TV, with older eyes, but I still love the rhino scene. Yes, you know, when Ace Ventura crawls like a baby through a fake rhinoceros ass. Even today, when someone parks the car well at the first attempt in a tight space, I say "like a glove."
Ace Ventura is back!
This sequel to the hilarious Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is just as funny, but also very different. This installment is written by Steve Oedekerk, and really ramps up the "comedy" aspect of the genre. While the first had a solid plot, this movie is zany, more ridiculous, and completely wild.
Take for instance the fight scene, in which Ace gets two spears thrown into his legs. Its funny, but he's seen walking away fine in the next scene as they leave the village. Since this is more of a comedy, there's less danger. But the film is not without its hilarity. There are just as many laughs out loud scenes throughout, my favorites are the robotic rhino, the fight, and Ace vs. a crocodile. Despite its change in tone, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls is just as good as the first.
For example, when Ventura starts to eat the food at the tribe's festival, he does not realize what he was eating until he is told what it really was. I thought Ventura was the smart one here? The whole point of the first film was so that the joke would be on everyone else; now the roles are switched? Why? Does the laugh really need to be on our comedic hero? It was at that point I sta, led to wonder whether Ace really knew what he was doing.
Of course, these kinds of instances did not happen all the time. There were many parts where Ventura was surrounded by upper-class people who thought they were better than he was and just like the first film he proved them wrong with a snotty remark and an obscene gesture. That's the old Ace I know! That is what made Ace Ventura such a character.
Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls is almost a perfect sequel. It still has good laughs but it is dumbed down by its mediocre screenplay. It is because of this that Ace Ventura does not seem always on top of everyone else like he was in the first film. Decent follow up, but since Ace is in a totally different place, none of that wonderful original cast follows him. Well, Spike returns I guess. McNeice is good here as the straight man, and Callow is a great bad guy, as are his two hillbilly thugs, but it seems like the jokes aren't as free-flying as in the original. It sometimes feels like a movie Carrey was forced to do, not one he put his full heart in. I know he personally hates sequels.
That said there are a few funny moments that will have you laughing out loud. The Hippo birth scene is something you just have to see. I personally love this one scene he survives a fall down the rapids and screams he's alive, only to have a crocodile pop up next to him. My favorite moment. The spitting scene was also a highlight.
